Hungry days and seasonal delays

Yesterday I rolled out of bed for a pre-sunrise BodyPump class. I love early, early workouts but only if I get the prescribed 7-8 hours of sleep. Otherwise sleep wins every time.

Weight lifting leaves me hungry all. day. long. I drank a big green smoothie as soon as I got home, but grazed throughout the morning until I decided snacks wouldn’t cut it anymore and put together an earlylunch

Braised kale, olives, chickpeas, trail mix, Mary’s crackers, balsamic, honey, truffle oil with veggies and fruit

For the afternoon I headed to class for my Food Culture and Communication class where we spent three hours talking about local food.

After more snackage and my favorite pumpkin drink

Awake tea soy misto with one pump of pumpkin. Boom.

I was planning on sleeping in this morning but found myself creeping people on Facebook at 4:30 in the morning, so I caught another spin class. I just keep growing more and more obsessed with RPM, I used to find myself on the verge of death by the end of this class but my strength and endurance has grown which means I’ve been finding ways to make it more challenging — cranking up the resistance and staying on the saddle durring climbs.

Breakfast — I call this the “Clinging on to Summer”

Overnight oats with banana, berries, and peanut butter. In reality, I am desperate for Calgary to finally settle in to autumn. Meaning I can wear leggings and leg warmers and denim jackets without dying of heat stroke. But while berries are still in the store (and still delicious!) They’ll be on my plate.

Finally, here is lunch from today. Roasted beets, braised kale, tofu ricotta, garlic stuffed olives, almonds, and balsamic vinegar.

I imagine that my insides are stained a bright shade of magenta.

My days have maintained a steady gym-work-school-yoga-study pattern. Tomorrow will offer something new and exciting into the mix. See you then!

Crazy Sexy Adventure Day 12: Fresh out of green

Between juicing, green smoothies, and beastly salads, I have eaten all the green things in my house! Including a Costco sized bag of romaine lettuce, snap peas, cucumbers… I am a monster.

Breakfast was buckwheat-millet quick bread with almond butter, nectarine and blueberries.

As much as I enjoy my big green smoothies, they are not ideal before a work out. I had one on Sunday before Body Combat and felt pretty uncomfortable throughout the whole class. Breakfasts like this satisfy my growly stomach but don’t have the volume that threatens to resurface at any given jump-kick.

Today’s combat class was a new release, meaning we kicked, punched and screamed to new music and choreography. It was a tough class and I ended up sweating buckets.

Smoothies after combat classes are much more enjoyable. Banana, cherries, almond milk and cocoa powder as soon as I got home from the gym

and baked sweet potato rounds with nutritional yeast and hummus a little bit later.

Today was the first day of registration for the fall semester at school. I’m trying to do as much as I can in terms of work, school and extra curricular without getting overwhelmed and scheduling is tricky but I know from experience, it always works out in the end. A few of the classes that I reaaaallly want to take this semester have already filled up, but I’m just putting it out into the universe that I have faith that a spot will open up for me. Hear that, universe? I’m on to you.

I went to work for the afternoon, picked up a few groceries and was welcomed home by the smell of my mom’s special pasta sauce. She makes it by simply mixing chopped, fresh tomatoes, garlic, salt and an Italian herb blend with a glug of olive oil and broiling it on low until it becomes saucy. I simply do not understand how it always turns out so delicious, although, simple is often best. I mixed it up with some broccoli, spinach, brown rice spaghetti, and nutritional yeast.

Happy Wednesday! I can see the weekend in the not so distant future.

Breakfasted eventually

Overnight oats – oatmeal, almond milk, chia seeds, banana, peach, coconut, peanut butter, granola.

I recall being at the gym at some point as well. I watched an episode of Mad Men on my iPhone while playing on the stairmill and then lifted weights like a dude.

The 10% of my brain that I use was pretty fogged up for the rest of the day. Why can’t I be one of those people who don’t turn into mashed potatoes on less than 6 hours of sleep !?

Whatever though, I deal with my issues in grown up ways.

Backwards Monday

Dear Self,

Your gym pants aren’t uncomfortable because you ate too much gelato and drank too much wine in Hawaii. They’re uncomfortable because…

Ran to and from the gym with a leg workout in the middle this morning! I had to pull up my pants after each set of squats and didn’t realized my pants were backwards until I was about to hop into the shower. How. Embarrassing.

Lunch was lettuce wraps stuffed with tuna [+olive oil mayo, dijon, chili flakes, garlic powder and pepper]

Side of cottage cheese and an ornje.

Back to work today! I work in a great part of town and you can tell it’s getting warm and sunny outside when all the customers become extra friendly from the Vitamin D! Looking forward to my third summer on the job : )

For dinner, I made an omelet with goats cheese and salsa verde, side of Portuguese tomato rice and simple wilted greens

Juggling watching LOST on Netflix, putting together a Hawaii album, and folding laundry. Multitasking at its finest. G’night!

Breakfasts, Lately

Happy Monday!

My morning started out well enough. I was up at the butt-crack of dawn and had a really good lower body work out. Unfortunately, I was feeling a bit off near the end of my workout and spent all class with really strong pains in my stomach. I felt like I ate an avocado !?! Thankfully, I was able to not go into work today and came home to curl into a ball with tea and textbooks for the rest of the day.

Backing up to the weekend. On Friday night, my friends swooped me away from work and we went out for dinner and a little bit too much wine. I think I’m done with alcohol for the time being. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t drink a ridiculous amount of alcohol, I just have an embarrassingly low tolerance for the juice.

The next morning, I hung out at Good Earth Cafe to study for a bit before heading to the Yoga Passage. I get a Good Earth coffee between classes most days of the week and I’ve been waiting for the ‘right time’ to have one of their cinnamon rolls. What better time than a lazy Saturday morning while nursing a mild hangover? I took a peek at the nutritional info and was pleasantly surprised that they are whole-wheat, and <10 g of sugar!

After I felt content with my studying, I opted for a stroll around downtown in favour of the rigorous Ashtanga 2 class that I usually take on Saturdays. Something about inversions and back bends and binding sounded less than appealing given the state that I was in.

I did, however, make it back to the Yoga Passage for the afternoon hot restorative class which felt like a reset button on my entire body. I came out a new woman! In desperate need of a shower.

Smoothie Sunday

This was 1 frozen banana, 1 clementine, 1 tbsp. chia seeds, 1.5 tbsp. coconut flour, 1 c. almond milk, 1 tsp. vanilla extract topped with toasted coconut it was DE-licious and excellent fuel for Body Combat

Before my workout this morning, I had an oatmeal pancake (this recipe) with a laughing cow wedge, peanut butter and strawberry preserves on top.

I made a batch of 6 of these pancakes last night for easy first breakfasts (I usually have 2 smaller breakfasts because I can’t work out on a full stomach, and I know the importance of fueling my big scary muscles post-workout)

One more fun thing. I’m going to Hawaii with my family in exactly one month! Initially, I thought I would be left behind because of my exam schedule, but it turns out that there is a week between my last class and my first exam where I can join my brother and parents who get TWO weeks in Maui. I expect to have flash cards in my carry on bag.

Oh, Snap

It’s a cold snap.

Temperatures in Cowtown have dropped to below 30 degrees. Eyeball freezing temperature!

Mouth burning oats

I headed to class and then to the University gym. I’ve heard rumors that it is always crowded and unfortunately, the rumors are true. Dang healthy folk! I still managed to get in a good work out, hurts to type (but it was a leg work out…?)

I went to work for the afternoon and made the painfully cold commute home.

My mom has this annoying habit of reading my mind and made cabbage soup for dinner. This aint your Cabbage-soup-diet-cabbage-soup. Super simple and delicious with a side of cheesy toast.

I’m currently listening to the Robinson Crusoe audio book. I just could. not. focus. on that novel! But having someone read it to me works quite nicely. I’m a little annoyed, however, that I dropped $35 on the book itself. Lesson learned!


Sleeping Yogi

Hooray for Friday!

Most nights I fall asleep on my back or in the fetal position and wake up sprawled out, inverted or in some sort of advanced bind. Today I woke up with my body was facing one direction and my head facing the other. As a result my neck has been giving me attitude all day.

I tiptoed downstairs in the wee hours of the morning (getting back on the early bird wagon) for some breakfast

sauteed apple and peanut butter wrap, cinnamon, pumpkin butter and granola also joined the party.

I lazed around for a bit then went to the gym for a leg work out that felt ho-hum while I was going through it but by the time I showered afterward I was in pain. I’ll take it!

Lunch was a big salad

-spinach, tomato, goats cheese, chickpeas, sunflower seeds, dried cranberries, home-made pomegranate/ balsamic vianegrette & a slice of cinnamon raisin toast

And dinner after I got home from work was salmon and bowties with tomato-basil sauce.

I’m just figuring out my plans for the weekend. It’s going to be a busy one! I’m getting ready to go back to school on Monday (!) and have some plans that will be keeping me out past my bed time on Saturday night. Harrrrumph.

At Home Foam

Hands up if you like pumpkin!

Hands up if you didn’t know that you like pumpkin until you started reading food blogs in the fall and became aware of this crazy community of people who stir pumpkin into anything and everything that they eat and secretly hold pumpkin appreciation parties where they dress like pumpkins and eat pumpkins and sing about pumpkins. Pumpkin, pumpkin, pumpkin.

I ate a lot of pumpkin today.

This morning I had gym plans, the latest Les Mills releases for all of their programs have been released and my gym was offering ‘sample’ classes of each new release. I stayed for four out of six classes, and tried two that I never have before, Body Jam and Body Combat. Body Jam is essentially a dance class, they build on choreography throughout and by the end you are a pro dancing your way through an entire song. LOVED.

But my new obsession may just be Body Combat. Holy aggression release! It’s a mixed martial arts inspired class full of kicking and punching and screaming. Even though I punch like a girl I had a killer time and my shoulders are killing me! It hurts to type, so bye!

not quite.

Before I went to the gym, I had two slices of pumpernickel bread with maple-cinnamon pecan butter, pumpkin butter, granola and chocolate chips

and after I got home I tried my hand at making a pumpkin spice latte, it worked! Maybe now I can quit depleting my savings account in the name of delicious coffee beverages, all in the name of foamy foam!

A couple of times a week, I go to the Second Cup near by my work and ask for a small medium roast brew white with soy and one pump of pumpkin spice. With a side of raised eyebrows from employees and bystanders. I’m a bit of a coffee diva, but truth be told, it’s because Second Cup coffee isn’t that great! Tim Hortons coffee however, is hot brewed cocaine and unicorn tears. I love it black and bitter.

Anyways, Second Cup seems to charge an extra dollar for each additional word in an order, so even though I only get a coffee once or twice a week, it adds up and I’d much rather spend my money on pretty bowls (weird habit) or groupons that I’ll never end up using, or shoes. Mmm… Shoes…

Pumpkin Spice Cafe Au Lait

1/2 c. strong brewed coffee
3/4 c. unsweetened almond milk
1/4 c. soy milk
1 tbsp. pumpkin spice syrup

DIRECTIONSIn a small sauce pan, heat the milks together. Once the milk is slightly scalded (small bubbles begin to form around the edge of the pan) add as much syrup as you like and either transfer it carefully into a blender, or use an immersion blender to whip the milk until it becomes nice and frothy. Pour the milk into a mug over the hot coffee.

Pumpkn Spice Syrup

3/4 c. maple syrup
3/4 c. water
1/4 c. pumpkin puree
2 sticks cinnamon
2 cloves
1/2 tsp. dried ginger
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp. vanilla extract

DIRECTIONSIn a small sauce pan, combine all ingredients and simmer on low for five minutes. Strain through a fine mesh sieve and press the pumpkin through with the back of a spoon. Put the strained syrup back into a sauce pan and simmer for another five minutes until it thickens slightly.

The other day, I had SUCH a craving for a big, juicy burger slab of tofu

Piled high with hummus, dijon, ketchup, banana peppers, pickles, sprouts, romaine, tomato slices AND onion. I believe that is all.

In other news, I’ve decided that once school is over, I will not be buying a summer pass for the gym (right now, it’s included in my tuition, but my membership will be over at the end of June.) Instead I’m going to spend the summer playing outside and doing LOTS of yoga. I burnt myself out at the gym and would be completely happy not seeing another meat-head dumbell for the rest of the summer!
