Crazy Sexy Adventure Day 6: Happy Cramper

Today was a 9 to 7 work day capped off with a glorious yoga practise. Not a lot of food pictures, but y’all know what salad in Tupperware looks like, right?

First thing in the a.m. I chugged a juice.

I made two blends, Green (broccoli, romaine, kale, cucumber, celery, asparagus, lemon, apple and strawberries) and Purple (beets, romaine, cucumber, snap peas, pineapple, parsley and ginger) Both are delicious, I swear. But something magical happens when they are combined. I had a bright red ‘juice mustache’ for the morning.

Once I got hungry I made a chocolate cherry smoothie (banana, cherries, cocoa, chia seeds, almond butter, almond milk) and was off for a day of work at both my jobs.

At Yoga Passage I was able to sit in on one of the teacher training sessions with Ray Hawkins  who talked about Yoga Therapy, Koshas and Herbal Medicine. He had a great personality and an endless supply of information and experience. I could have listened to him talk for days!

After a few hours of work at EHS, I was back to the Passage for Gord’s Hot class. Everything feels great. I got a cramp in my side today and was absolutely thrilled because for the first time in I don’t know how long I had a cramp in my abdomen that wasn’t a digestive related cramp. Just a crappy hydration muscle cramp, which I quickly remedied with water and coconut water.

Tomorrow is my first juice fast day! My goals are to keep calm, be dedicated but not obsessive, listen to my body, and refrain from taking out any potential crazy bitchiness crankiness on others as no one is forcing me to fast, but it is something that I’d like to experience.

Hello Sunshine

School is out. I officially handed in my final Spring semester assignment last Thursday, then dove face first into work, organization, and a loooong day of volunteering at this year’s Canada Day celebrations here in Calgary.

I have finally settles into my Summer break. There will be lots of working, playing with friends, yoga, running (I guess I like running again) eating, drinking and being merry. I’m off to Miami in exactly a month, so I’m ok with the fact that I am basically working every single day of July in some way shape or form.

This morning I worked at Yoga Passage but first, a hot breakfast. I have been on a smoothie kick due to the intense, muggy heat in Calgary, but this morning was a bit on the chilly side

I had plans to run some stairs with my friend Natradee before hitting my favorite 6:10 hot class back at Yoga Passage, but time didn’t permit and I’m kind of glad because this class was nuts. My legs were shaking and I couldn’t imagine what would have happened had I run up and down several flights of stairs before hand.

After class we took our sweet time before heading home, enjoyed a coconut water with random emergency snacks from the bottoms of our bags

Weirdos.

I was feeling un inspired for dinner and was contemplating just digging into an entire watermelon, but my mom had made a turkey Shepard’s pie and apparently that was exactly what I was craving.

With half a cup of sriracha on top.

It’s good to be back! 

I’m starting to notice a pattern here

Another weekend bites the dust.

On Friday I went to a orthodontist appointment to pick up my stylin’ new retainer. Fact: I wore braces for seven years, plus two years of special retainers and head gears. Every time someone tells me I have a nice smile I reply with a snarky “I had better have a nice smile after all the years of torture I went through” It’s very unbecoming of me but I can’t help myself.

I went to work at Yoga Passage for the afternoon. It was my first solo shift and just when I started to get a little bit anxious, I heard an OM from the studio behind me and a sweet yogi gave me a Vegan, Gluten-Free cookie and tea. I could get used to this.

Typical Friday night.

On Saturday I was up early, double fisted a smoothie and tea and went to the Ashtanga 2 class before working.

I had a birthday to go to later that night so I did my hair, put on a uncomfertable outfit and even worse shoes and then proceeded to fall asleep (fully dressed) on top of a pile of laundry. This morning I had breakfast with my friend Natradee, we enjoyed a spread of yogurt with fruit and granola, peanut butter on toast and a boiled egg. It felt like a hotel breakfast.

Afterwards we went to Body Combat, where the instructor cruelly added plyometric lunges and donkey kicks to the mix. Grunting. Lots of grunting.

As much as I wanted to stay at home for the rest of the day and watch more Mad Men, I knew today was really my only chance to make a significant dent in my research paper that is due on Thursday -silent sobs- so I packed my bags and set up camp at Higher Ground Cafe for some work time.

First of the month

Hey there

All of a sudden it’s Friday, and it’s June and I don’t even know what to do with any of this. It’s all just too much. I also need to rein in the melodrama. Melodramatics? Melodramaticisms. Yeah.

As far as I am concerned, there is only one remedy for spinach on its death-bed:

Sludge. Banana, Cocoa, Coconut flour, Vanilla protein, rolled oats, cashew butter, instant coffee, almond milk and spinach. I used to be of the opinion that smoothies would never keep me full but they do this strange rib-sticking, stomach coating thing and the only thing my stomach is empty of is GROWLS which I quite like when I’m doing my thing at work (Yoga Passage today) I’m getting into the groove of it and love talking to all of my teachers outside of the class.

Lunch

I call this one, “MOM! we need to go grocery shopping!!!!” aka. Stale pita, ancient olive tapanade, leathery sun-dried tomatoes, the last of the hummus and questionable feta. Yum (?)

Snackface-ism.

blueberries, pita chips and carmelized onion hummus. We went grocery shopping.

Then I crashed hard. Face first onto the pile of laundry on my bed for an hour of uninterrupted napping glory.

I did the whole ‘should I, shouldn’t I’ thing about working out and in the end I took a stroll to the gym for Zumba, shook my butt for an hour and walked home.

Dinner was broiled salmon, spinach and roasted potatoes topped off with a mini Haagen Daz bar.

Happy first of the month, kind folks. Do me a favour and have a GREAT weekend. I’ll be working my ass off but this is exactly what I wanted. : )

TGIM

This weekend was so busy with Market Collective and Eat Real YYC, training for my new job, play time with friends and a couple of workouts, it was a relief to finally make it to Monday

Breakfast before Body Combat yesterday was Ezekiel cinnamon raisin toast with peanut butter, banana and grapefruit.

Then I kicked some ass. After a 30 second shower, I made a big Green Smoothie and took it to the Yoga Passage to learn the ropes for my new job. I think I’m going to like this a lot. Another bonus of working at YP now is that I get to chat with a bunch of happy, bendy people in Calgary and get paid for it! What a gig.

This morning I woke up early, inhaled a breakfast ( greek yogurt, mango, banana, granola, peanut butter ) and walked to the gym, lifted heavy things and walked back.

Quick lunch before work was a cucumber, mango and feta salad with Spolumbo’s spicy chicken sausage and lime juice.

I had better get to bed. There is a 9:30 Vinyasa class (at my new place of work – kgdkjgdh!!!!) tomorrow morning with my name on it!

Backwards Monday

Dear Self,

Your gym pants aren’t uncomfortable because you ate too much gelato and drank too much wine in Hawaii. They’re uncomfortable because…

Ran to and from the gym with a leg workout in the middle this morning! I had to pull up my pants after each set of squats and didn’t realized my pants were backwards until I was about to hop into the shower. How. Embarrassing.

Breakfast

Green monster: Almond milk, coffee, frozen banana, spinach, cocoa powder, ice + Cinnamon raisin bagel with peanut butter

Lunch was lettuce wraps stuffed with tuna [+olive oil mayo, dijon, chili flakes, garlic powder and pepper]

Side of cottage cheese and an ornje.

Back to work today! I work in a great part of town and you can tell it’s getting warm and sunny outside when all the customers become extra friendly from the Vitamin D! Looking forward to my third summer on the job : )

For dinner, I made an omelet with goats cheese and salsa verde, side of Portuguese tomato rice and simple wilted greens

Juggling watching LOST on Netflix, putting together a Hawaii album, and folding laundry. Multitasking at its finest. G’night!

New Year Ramble

Umm…

Merry Christmas Eve/Christmas/Happy Boxing Day/Happy New Year.

I’m embarrassed. My coworkers insisted I took some time off. They all but had a restraining order against me, keeping me away from the clinic between December 23rd until January 3rd, leaving me with SO. MUCH. time on my hands and still I neglected senorita blog for the entire break.

I wasn’t terribly busy. Honestly. I alternated between sleeping more than is probably even allowed, eating…more than is probably even allowed, catching up with friends that I should and will hang out with more often (New years resolution!)

You could find me spending money on kinda-but-not-really-neccessary things because I won’t be working full-time any more and I probably won’t be able to afford things like my FOURTH nose piercing (I’ve had to repierce four. FOUR times.) and a new iPod and lots and lots and lots of coffee and a new years eve dress and three new pairs of Lululemon pants (on sale do you think I’m insane?). This was also the first year that I could actually afford to get my loved ones Christmas gifts, which makes me so happy

Oh! I also spent my time practising YOGA lots and lots of yoga! I kept going strong with my December yoga challenge, and though I missed a couple of formal classes, I managed to find myself in some compromising positions and awkward twists while watching TV most nights.

My camera has basically been collecting dust for the past two weeks, so I would refer to this post for an idea of what Christmas was like at my house (although, this time I was lazy and only made one dessert, decreasing the total number of sticks of butter involved in Christmas dinner to 2)

New year’s eve was spent dancing my face off with friends and strangers alike.

I like the idea of new years resolutions but I’m rather impulsive and if I want to do something I like to do it right away. With that said, this year I’ll floss more, meditate more, be an awesome student, think before I speak , prioritize, keep calm, see friends more often, blog more consistently, sit up straighter, shave my legs once in a while, learn my parent’s language (so they can stop talking about me behind my back in front of me!) and learn more about wine. Which will require a lot. a. lot. of studying.

Story of my life for the last two weeks.

Now I’m back to work for one more full week and then I’m going to be a student again! I can not wait to start geeking out. I’m studying communications part-time, working part-time.

During my yoga focused December, I literally did not go to the gym once. I love yoga-high but I did miss the different kind of rush that a work out offers. On Monday, I took the familiar stroll to my gym and lifted weights for only 30 minutes and my body went from confused to uncooperative to thankful and now it is just plain angry. Everything hurts. Tuesday night I went to my favorite 6:10 hot yoga class with Gord, I basically skip to the studio giggling with glitter in my eyes on Tuesday nights and float home with a dopey grin on my face.

I don’t even care that I’m soaked with sweat and it is usually over an hours commute via foot/train/bus home in the cold and I don’t usually eat dinner until 9:30 or 10:00 p.m. meaning I’ve gone between 5-9 hours without food and we know how I get when I get hungry.

Nope. Tuesday nights are my favorite.

I’m trying to get back into the habit of waking up at at least 6 a.m. For the last little while, my alarm would go off at 5:29, I’d blink and it would be 8:30 ?! Deep down I am an early bird, so today I made the effort to JUMP out of bed at the sound of my alarm.

Broke fast.

 

Toast, apple, peanut butter, granola, pumpkin butter

and had like four hours to kill until I had to leave for work. So what else would I do? I made dinner so that it would be waiting for me when I got home from work.

Roasted garlic and brie soup. I had about half of a large wheel of brie left over from our Christmas dinner so after a brief browse on Foodgawker I put the cheese to use and it turned out delicious!

I feel like we’re caught up! I hope everyone is having a good start to the year ❤

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Today I was violently thrust into my normal routine.

Toast + banana/ almond butter/ pumpkin butter/ granola

6 A.M. WAKE UP. 9:30 YOGA 11:30 – 6 WORK. GROCERIES. MAKE DINNER. EAT. BLOG. WHAM-BAM-ALAKAZAM. Trying not to let December insanity get to me, it’s my favorite time of year so I’m doing my best to savour all the sparkles and music and cookies and time with my favorite people.

Dinner was chicken enchiladas

I asked my mom to bake-off some chicken in tomato salsa while I was at work and when I got home I simply shredded it and mixed it with corn, wrapped it in whole grain tortillas, drowned in salsa verde and sprinkled with sharp cheddar. Baked at 375 for 20 minutes and broiled to the finish.

Bendy December

I woke up earlier than usual because there were warnings for a snow storm here in Calgary. Anticipating a slow and painful commute, I broke fast, fast with a  yogurt bowl

out the door -> on the train -> no interferences -> at work 30 minutes early !?! 

Fueled by coffee (thanks boss!) a mile-long to-do list, and stray pieces of chocolate I found at the bottom of my purse — life savers– I made it through an open-to-close shift at work and then straight to yoga!

It’s been so long since I’ve gotten bendy, I know it’s not an excuse, but I’ve been busy and unmotivated!

Today, however was non negotiable. My yoga teacher friend Logan was teaching her last class at the Yoga Passage (ok, she’s teaching one more tomorrow morning at 6:45 a.m.) and I had to go! Logan was one of the teachers when I started practising yoga more that brought me back to my mat again and again. You simply can’t help but smile around her, nor can you speak in anything but a sugary sweet tone of voice. It’s magic!

She’s off on a new adventure to New York City ! She’ll be so missed but I am SO excited for her!

Something I’ve been mulling over for the last couple of weeks has been the idea of doing a yoga challenge for the month of December. I think it would be a great way to finish off the year. Anyone care to join? It doesn’t have to be  a 90 minute power flow class every single day, it can be a couple of sun salutations during commercial breaks, or a few minutes in childs pose first thing in the morning. December is a very busy month, but there will always be something standing in the way so why not Carpe Di-asana!? Does that even make sense?

On Friday

I had plans to go to 6 a.m. spin

It didn’t happen. My alarm woke me up at 5:15, I blinked and it was 7:45. Fail.

I got an ab workout at least from laughing so hard at work. I love my coworkers.

I managed to eat a green vegetable for the first time in a few days

In the form of kale chips. Working on it

I had my first coffee since the cleanse. Small medium roast brew white with soy milk and one pump of gingerbread please and thanks.

The people at the coffee shop missed me so much.

I made myself a nice little dinner of butternut squash – barley risotto with goats cheese

I really just wanted cookies.

Browned butter chocolate chip cookies. Which we’ll talk more about tomorrow. If they last that long.
