Veggie Potluck

One of my goals for this year at university was to get involved in at least one group/ society/ committee.

One that caught my eye was the Vegetarian and Vegan club. Though I am neither, I was excited to find a group of people who gather to talk about good food, ethical practises and everything in between. Last night was the welcome potluck/ meet and greet and there was a great spread of food and wonderful conversation. I also met a fellow blogger Mallory. She’s had culinary training and is a runner extraordinaire.

I brought pumpkin cookies using this recipe (used spelt flour and a flax egg) and veggie juice to the potluck. There was a good assortment of grainy and vegetable salads and home made pretzel buns. YUM

This morning I took an RPM class and came home to enjoy a lazy breakfast while catching up with Glee

{Goat yogurt, apple, banana, granola, cranberries, honey and peanut butter}

The weekend is so close!

Crazy Sexy Month

I mentioned that this next month will be straight work work work. But I’m adamant about squeezing in some daily play. I have the tendency to hermit when things get busy but sometimes I like to remind myself that I’m twenty years old and being responsible is nice and all but there’s more to life than to-do lists and alarm clocks.

It was my lovely Natradee friends birthday on Wednesday and we went to Double Zero Pizza for dinner.

The table ordered a bunch of their pizzas and shared. I’ve gotten into the habit of going out and enjoying a glass of wine on Wednesdays. Completely by accident but it’s a great way to celebrate the week being half over!

Eats from the week

Standard yogurt mess. So much delicious fruit. Can’t stop. Won’t stop.

Always.

Peanut butter and banana or Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin bread with cherries. I am going to turn into a cherry.

Omelette stuffed with butternut squash, carmelized onion hummus, and brie. So out of season but so, so good.

The other night I was desperate for ice cream but we didn’t have any in the house. So I made a protein shake and put sprinkles in it.

Not the same thing, I realize.

The other night I was out with my friend Torrie, and while catching up, we decided to embark upon The Crazy, Sexy Diet (while chowing on nachos and beer, no less)

My intentions are pure. It has nothing to do with losing weight. I simply want to clean up my meals and get back to more ‘real food’, cut back on meat (the CSD is vegan) and feel sparkly-er (totally a word). Summer comes with fun beverages and food, which I am happy to enjoy, but whether I like it or not, it has a huge effect on my energy levels and does not do much for my wimpy stomach. I mentioned it to my parents and they hilariously jumped on board, which will make things much easier and more fun. More to come! Over and out.

I’m starting to notice a pattern here

Another weekend bites the dust.

On Friday I went to a orthodontist appointment to pick up my stylin’ new retainer. Fact: I wore braces for seven years, plus two years of special retainers and head gears. Every time someone tells me I have a nice smile I reply with a snarky “I had better have a nice smile after all the years of torture I went through” It’s very unbecoming of me but I can’t help myself.

I went to work at Yoga Passage for the afternoon. It was my first solo shift and just when I started to get a little bit anxious, I heard an OM from the studio behind me and a sweet yogi gave me a Vegan, Gluten-Free cookie and tea. I could get used to this.

Typical Friday night.

On Saturday I was up early, double fisted a smoothie and tea and went to the Ashtanga 2 class before working.

I had a birthday to go to later that night so I did my hair, put on a uncomfertable outfit and even worse shoes and then proceeded to fall asleep (fully dressed) on top of a pile of laundry. I guess the week caught up with me. I felt awful when I woke up to my friends text that read “Heyy how far are u

This morning I had breakfast with my friend Natradee, we enjoyed a spread of yogurt with fruit and granola, peanut butter on toast and a boiled egg. It felt like a hotel breakfast.

Afterwards we went to Body Combat, where the instructor cruelly added plyometric lunges and donkey kicks to the mix. Grunting. Lots of grunting.

As much as I wanted to stay at home for the rest of the day and watch more Mad Men, I knew today was really my only chance to make a significant dent in my research paper that is due on Thursday -silent sobs- so I packed my bags and set up camp at Higher Ground Cafe for some work time.

Feminism + Fuel.

More Fuel.

This is my life. Cookies, Wine, Exercise, Work. I’ll take it.

Do less. While it’s still an option.

I played a little mental catch up this morning. I skipped my planned 9:30 a.m. yoga class in favour of taking the morning to slowly enjoy breakfast, watch some TV, and read some articles for my research paper. Every single day of the next two weeks is booked morning to midnight so I’m going to enjoy any down time I can get.

Yogurt, banana, blueberries, granola, peanut butter

I had class from 12-3, followed by an appointment and then I parked it at Higher Ground Cafe to get some serious work done on my paper. I am so tired of reading about feminism! (does that make me a bad woman?)

After my brain and ovaries could take no more, I headed to Yoga Passage for a late, hot class — I do not recommend an iced Americano pre-hot yoga.

I’ll leave you with this song I have listened to 1000 times today

Move Breathe Flow

Hey guys! Did you all have a wonderful weekend?

I really did. Work went by quickly on Saturday and I came home to get to work on my catering gig for move.breathe.flow at the Yoga Passage tonight.

1. Quinoa Stuffed Mushroom 2. Caprese Bites 3. Sweet Potato Fries 4. Chocolate Stuffed Raspberries 5. Green Smoothie 6. Coconut-Date Bites

This morning I had a strange twinge in my elbow/ triceps that prevented me from fully straightening my right arm so I bowed out of body combat knowing I’d probably only make the problem worse if I spent an hour punching the air with all my might. I’m glad I did because food prep took much more time than I had expected and I was working from 9 am right until 3:30. At that point, my elbow was much better so I packed up the food and headed to Yoga Passage for the 4:00 Hot and very sweaty class. After a quick shower I set up the food for the event.

Move.breathe.flow is a fundraiser raising money that goes towards scholarships for yoga teacher training. I catered the first one but wasn’t able to stay for the event itself. A mistake I wasn’t about to repeat. This time, move.breathe.flow was bigger and better with a live DJ blaring tunes while you essentially dance like no one is watching, in a room full of people. It’s an incredible feeling — completely liberating! Before I knew it, two hours had passed and I was drenched in sweat all over again.

Eats from this weekend, that didn’t include constant nibbling while preparing food for the event

Saturday’s Breakfast

Yogurt, blueberries, banana, raw strawberry-chia jam, greek yogurt and granola in a waning peanut butter jar

Yes.

Lunch was quinoa mixed with hummus, feta and chickpeas with a side of cherry tomatoes, mozzarella and balsamic reduction

Todays breakfast was yet another yogurt mess with blueberries, nectarine and banana — overdosing on fresh fruit — granola, peanut butter and honey

and lunch was an open-faced mozzarella and tomato sandwich with carrots, caramelized onion hummus and strawberries

I’m blissed out and ready for bed. Toodeloo

Here, There, Everywhere. Also, Soup.

I think the weather makers in Calgary are confused. Alternating threats of rain and blasts of sunshine. WHAT DO I WEAR !?

Slept in and made a yogurt mess

Greek Yogurt, Rolled oats, trail mix (sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries and golden raisins) banana, honey and peanut butter.

Eaten with my favorite spoon that makes everything taste better. It’s science.

School: Research paper on psychoanalytic feminism, the male gaze and the portrayal of women in advertising. Boom.

Physical Activity: Body Combat, Quick weight sessions, Yoga (always) and walking everywhere because I’m too poor to buy a car. Also this:

Work: I like it a lot.

Social life: #FAIL. I’ve kind of become that friend who sucks at making time for her friends. Not cool, acknowledged and working on it.

I bought a day planner. I expect it to fix everything. Also, do you even realize how difficult it is to find a day planner half way through the year? Some people need some time to get their shit together.

I’m at this weird stage where I want to do everything and have no money or time to do any of it. Buy a car, move out, yoga teacher training, travel the universe NEW KITTEN. None of it is happening any time soon. Not cool, acknowledged and working on it.

After school snack

Cinnamon apple sauce, granola and almond butter. This is even better if you let it sit for a little while so the granola gets soggy. True story.

I went to hot yoga later in the evening and just finished the quickest dinner, let’s call it spicy Thai soup with shrimp and vermicelli.

Boiled vegetable broth and a splash of full fat coconut milk, threw in shrimp and lemon grass, garlic, ginger, sliced onions, diced tomato, siracha. Simmer while you shower off your yoga stank, throw in a handful of brown rice vermicelli and shrimp. Simmer for a few more minutes until cooked through and finish with a squirt of lime.

If I go to sleep RIGHT NOW I will be able to get 7 hours of sleep. This weekend is insane!

TGIM

This weekend was so busy with Market Collective and Eat Real YYC, training for my new job, play time with friends and a couple of workouts, it was a relief to finally make it to Monday

Breakfast before Body Combat yesterday was Ezekiel cinnamon raisin toast with peanut butter, banana and grapefruit.

Then I kicked some ass. After a 30 second shower, I made a big Green Smoothie and took it to the Yoga Passage to learn the ropes for my new job. I think I’m going to like this a lot. Another bonus of working at YP now is that I get to chat with a bunch of happy, bendy people in Calgary and get paid for it! What a gig.

This morning I woke up early, inhaled a breakfast ( greek yogurt, mango, banana, granola, peanut butter ) and walked to the gym, lifted heavy things and walked back.

Quick lunch before work was a cucumber, mango and feta salad with Spolumbo’s spicy chicken sausage and lime juice.

I had better get to bed. There is a 9:30 Vinyasa class (at my new place of work – kgdkjgdh!!!!) tomorrow morning with my name on it!

Barefoot Contessa + Tunes

Hey friends!

Since starting back at school and hitting the University gym, I’ve been reminded of how big of a pain it is to carry around everything that I need for the day! Lap top, text books, food AND gym stuff, it gets to be a lot. The biggest and most bulky weight is my running shoes, but I came up with a solution.

Vibrams! I bought a pair a couple of weeks ago and the benefits go FAR beyond the fact that they are light as a feather and I can squish them into the bottom of my backpack

They force you to run on th balls of your feet as opposed to your heels.

When you ‘heel strike’ it puts a lot of pressure on your joints, but running on the balls of your feet encourages proper form and I can feel it! I’m able to run much faster with no pain after my workout. I have, however, been experiencing major soreness in my calves, but that is common (from what I’ve read) and comes with running on the balls of your feet and should subside over time. The good thing is that it’s soreness in my muscles and not my joints. I love these things! They offer so much freedom in my workouts. I’ve worn them to Body Combat and because they are much less bulky than my runners, I feel much more agile. I’m doing jump kicks like a ninja! I wear them weight lifting as well and find it much easier to stabilize myself when doing things like lunges. My favorite use for them, however, is SPRINTS I feel like I’m flying! The only con to the Vibrams is how incredibly dorky they  look, but that’s a small price to pay, they are amazing.

I was on a pretty long running hiatus, and still am in regard to outside running, but I’m having a lot of fun playing on the treadmill (never thought I’d be saying that). Depending on my mood I like quick and dirty interval runs or more steady jogs where I can just zone out. I don’t mind running outside without music but the treadmill NEEDS tunes.

Quick and dirty playlist — I’m super embarrassed to post this but here we go. (click to enlarge)

Yes, I’m experiencing a slight Nicki Minaj obsession, that does not make me a bad person.

For slow and steady jogs I’ve been listening to this playlist (click to enlarge)

I listen to the same playlist over and over again until I never want to hear the songs ever again in my life.

Oh, and FOOD!

I’ve managed to snap a few pictures of some noteworthy meals

Last week, I roasted some green beans and tomatoes with herbs, salt, pepper, garlic, olive oil and parmesan cheese and steamed brussels sprouts in vegetable broth with salt, pepper, garlic and a drizzle of honey. Served along a two-egg omelette with a sprinkle of cheese.

My mom accidentally bought vanilla greek yogurt as opposed to our usual plain. It was SUPER sweet but I wasn’t about to let it go to waste  so one morning I doctored it up with orange zest, granola and cinnamon it was DE-licious.

Today after my favorite 6:10 hot class at The Yoga Passage I made the quickest dinner ever of sweet potato, wilted spinach mixed with a laughing cow wedge topped with an egg.

It is most definitely past my bed time, G’night!

Thursday

Thursdays are my loooong days.

Class from 8:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. and then right away off to karma cleaning at The Yoga Passage. I usually stick around for the 4:10 class afterwards but I have a midterm tomorrow and really needed the extra time today to start studying review

Rewind to my quickie breakfast of greek yogurt, granola, banana slices, strawberry preserves and peanut butter .

This breakfast will never get old.

Insert hours of lecture + note taking, last-minute readings and several cups of coffee here.

Once I got home from Karma Cleaning I parked it on the couch to get some studying done aaaaand promptly fell asleep. I should have just stayed for yoga! By the end of the evening I was restless so I jumped onto the treadmill for a little incline walking with my flashcards. I may or may not have done my workout in pj pants. Something > Nothing

Same ol’ Saturday and Sunday

Weekend posts seem to be becoming the norm around here. I’ll work on fitting in a few week day posts this week since my weekends are pretty routine.

Like slow, leisurely breakfasts. I enjoyed this classy, straight-from-the-waining-container bowl of yogurt with banana, pinapple and strawberries with chia seeds, peanut butter and granola.

Weekend posts seem to be becoming the norm around here. I’ll work on fitting in a few weekday posts this week since my weekends are pretty routine.

Like slow, leisurely breakfasts. I enjoyed this classy, straight-from-the-waning-container bowl of yogurt with banana, pineapple and strawberries with chia seeds, peanut butter and granola.

Breakfast was pretty substantial and it had to be in order to keep me going through my Saturday yoga doubles. Late lunches are to be expected on Saturdays

On Friday night, we ordered pizza and I made a big salad made with spinach, romaine, tomatoes, hearts of palm and shredded carrots to go along side. Saturday’s lunch was leftover salad topped with chickpeas, sunflower seeds, hummus and feta cheese.

It was really delicious and really satisfying.

After a little bit of reading and a whole lot of relaxing, I got started on dinner which was, yet again, inspired by Jen at Peanut Butter Runner. What can I say? It seems we have very similar taste buds because everything I see on her blog looks so very appealing.

I used her recipe for Brie and Apricot Chicken and served it along side sautéed kale and wild rice medley.

I slept in this morning and despite the sprinkling of snow that came overnight, I wanted something cold so I made a quickie breakfast of Weetabix, banana slices, dried cranberries, granola sprinkles, cinnamon, almond butter and almond milk.

This breakfast is so filling, almost too filling before kickboxing, but I needed the fuel to beat the crap out of the air in front of me.

The rest of the day draaaagged on. I feel like once I’m done with my homework, I have too much time on my hands, which is not true at all because I haven’t touched my laundry all week, my room is a mess and my feet are in desperate need of a self-pedicure.

Lunch was a fried egg with toast and mango slices

Later in the afternoon my mother brought me a coffee with I doctored up with frothed soymilk, cinnamon, and maple syrup.

Have you tried sweetening your coffee with maple syrup? Highly recommended.

Kick boxing days are my second hungriest days of the week (followed by lower-body-weights days) and my hunger hit me SO hard that I basically ran to the kitchen, made these potatoes, and hovered around my mom while she assembled turkey burgers. Once everything was in the oven, I proceeded to alternate between wolfing down forkfuls of salad and opening the oven door to check if dinner was ready. In my haste, I burnt my finger on a baking pan. Eventually, dinner was served.

Turkey burger on a whole-grain English muffin, ketchup, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes + Taters

I have a couple of hours before I head to bed, just enough time to squeeze in one load of laundry and do something about the state of my toes. G’night!
